Your NYSC Camp Check List

Batch A 2014, its almost time to embark on that journey you’ve looked forward to, the quest to get inducted into the koppa clan. Only those who survive these three weeks in the otondo jungle can be called koppas. Here’s a list of items that are essential for survival in otondo land (the land of white fowls). I would categorize them in parts, those you need to get admitted into the land and those you need for survival.

NYSC ORIENTATION CAMP REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

  1.      CALL –UP-LETTER: hellur(in chigul plus madeas voice)!!! If you don’t have this, where are you going to? Oh yeah I didn’t tell y’all yet, entry into otondo land is strictly by invitation!! Your call-up-letter is your invitation card. I know it is a very important document but
PLEASE! BIKO! EJO! DAN ALLAH! DO NOT LAMINATE YOUR CALL UP LETTER!!

  1.        REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS: Please no WAEC, NECO or JAMB Results.
    1.        Statement Of Result/ Diploma
    2. .       Foreign students take all the documents used for your registration
    3.       Final year ID Card/ Student ID Card
  2.        PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPHS:  take as many as you can, but in some camps you would be asked to take with the NYSC crested vest on a particular background. So add money for taking those to your budget
  3. .       PHOTOCOPIES OF YOUR DOCUMENTS: take like 10, you can make photocopies at mammy too but at a ridiculous price.
  4.        CERTIFICATES/LICENSES: Doctors, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Lab Scientists and all of us that need licenses or certification from regulatory bodies should carry along our licenses or certificates
  5. .       STATIONARY: pens, paper, gum/glue stick, stapler, staple pins and correction fluid (tippex). You would find this on camp but to afford begging and paying 20 naira for everything you staple take yours.

THE SURVIVAL LIST

  1. ROUND NECKED SHORT SLEEVE WHITE T-SHIRTS: the dress code in the land in white on white on white. I mean what did you expect? It’s the land of white fowls. You would be given 2 white shirts but unfortunately they are usually of poor quality or not your size and even if they are you need more than 2. Take at least six because you wouldn't have time to wash except on Sundays.
  2.   WHITE SHORTS: I beg you shorts, for Muslims some camps allow three quarters but not trousers or skirts. Like the shirts you would be given two but please come with yours for the same reasons you have to come with your shirts
  3.  PLAIN WHITE SNEAKERS/TENNIS SHOES: you would be given a pair that would most probably not be your size and would be hard to maintain. Remember it’s raining season so put the weather into consideration when buying the sneakers. I would advise you buy the rubber white sneaker they sell in mammy its about 500 naira
  4.  WHITE SOCKS: get plenty!! You would be given two though
  5. MOSQUITO NETS: trust me you would find jungle boot wearing mosquitoes with iron teeth. Protect yourself from malaria go with your mosquito net and rope to tie it. Your mosquito net also helps you build and protect your personal space.
  6.   BEDDINGS; bed sheets, pillowcase, wrapper to cover your body, a very thin blanket if you must use one. Buy pillow from mammy
  7.  WAIST POUCH!!!!: please move this to the top!!. Your waist pouch holds all your vital items. It keeps every item that must not get missing. It should be on you at all times even when you are sleeping.
  8.  PADLOCKS!!: you don’t want any of your things to get missing!! So go with enough except well you don’t value your items
  9.  BEVERAGE, CEREAL, COOKIES: basically all you need to supplement real food for when you are hungry and can’t find good food.
  10.  FOOD FLASKS, CEREAL BOWL, PLATE, CUTLERY:  you need these for eating and getting food from the kitchen.
  11.   PAINKILLERS , BALMS
  12.   DETTOL: if you don’t take care of yourself in camp, no one would.
  13.    DETERGENT: just buy from mammy you don’t want to be carrying too much load. In fact the lighter your box, the better for you. I hear you have to carry your box on your head into the land at some camps.
  14.  BUCKETS AND BOWL: you need a bucket and bowl for taking your bath, and a small bucket with cover for handling your business “you know wha am saying”. Buy the buckets in mammy
  15.  TOILETRIES:  bathing soap/shower gel(I think shower gels are better cus they are no proper bathrooms and if there was, you don’t want to place your soap just anywhere), Toilet Paper, Sanitary Towels
  16. TOWEL, HANDKERCHIEF
  17.    TORCH LIGHT, LAMPS(RECHARGEABLE OR BATTERY): if you carry a rechargeable lamp also make budget for charging it
  18.   PHONE BATTERIES: buy extra phone batteries, you most probably would not have electricity in your room and would have to charge your phone in mammy. And if you really love your phone, u can like to miss it for three weeks and get a nokia 105 just so you would be sure your phone would still be yours
  19.    CASH:  you would need at least 10k
  20.   PLENTY BLACK NYLON: you would find out what this is used for when you get there :p

When ever I tell people that I'm an introvert they're like "shut up" but really I am, although I like to go out and have fun once in a while. I am the last daughter of my father and the second draught and child of my mom, in other words I found myself in a polygamous home of ten children and two moms lol. I lived all my life in imo state and have an undying love for music, media and entertainment guess it's no surprise I found myself on radio.

Describe your service year in one word?

"Challenging" It was nothing I expected honestly but I'm super glad I experienced it.

What was the highlight of your Eko experience?

Gosh I really can't say cause every evening I spent in eko fm had its own special drama but there were when while stepping out of the premises people would ask "were you the female corper anchoring? You're good" and that made me feel awesome
